William James Hartnett was born on December 29, 1937; he was the son of Helen Dougherty and John Hartnett of Philadelphia. Known by many as "Bill," he was an uncelebrated man of letters, who could freely discourse on Greco-Roman history to European literature and philosophy to the modern geopolitical landscape. He was a lifelong lover of music, with tastes ranging from the American songbook to Sacred Music to Wagnerian operas. He never tired of European travel expressing a particular fondness for the cultural and epicurean treasures of France and Italy.  He was adept in technical and mathematical matters too and had a thriving 30 plus year career at Penn Detroit Diesel Allison LLC in Philadelphia.
