William James Hartnett was born on December 29, 1937; he was the son of Helen Dougherty and John Hartnett of Philadelphia. Known by many as "Bill," he was an uncelebrated man of letters, who could freely discourse on Greco-Roman history to European literature and philosophy to the modern geopolitical landscape. He was a lifelong lover of music, with tastes ranging from the American songbook to Sacred Music to Wagnerian operas. He never tired of European travel expressing a particular fondness for the cultural and epicurean treasures of France and Italy. He was adept in technical and mathematical matters too and had a thriving 30 plus year career at Penn Detroit Diesel Allison LLC in Philadelphia.
Surrounded by family, the soul of Bill Hartnett flew to God on the evening the 29th of February. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Hartnett, his daughter, Elizabeth Hartnett and his brothers Daniel Hartnett and John Hartnett.
