William J. Benzing

d. December 10, 2022

William “Billy” J. Benzing, a Chestnut Hill resident for 57 years, died peacefully at Keystone Hospice on December 10, 2022. Billy was born on October 17, 1942, in Fishtown Philadelphia and enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1960, serving as an air traffic controller at Aviano Air Force Base in Italy. After military service, he graduated from LaSalle College and the Temple School of Social Work, followed by thirty-five years as a Supervisor in the Philadelphia Probation Department. Billy was a member of Our Mother of Consolation parish and was active in the Chestnut Hill Youth Sports Club (formerly known as the Chestnut Hill Fathers’ Club) and encouraged and supported the creation of intramural co-ed leagues, which greatly expanded participation. In his retirement, he enjoyed attending jazz concerts at the Woodmere Art Museum, going to the theater, walking in the Morris Arboretum and along Forbidden Drive, and travelling throughout Europe. Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and William Elwood Benzing, and his brother, John Benzing. Maureen, Billy’s wife of 56 years, will miss his beautiful smile. His children and their spouses, Deirdre Flowers (Gary), Bridget (John Richardson), and Brendan (Cindy), will remember his frequent visits to see them in Baltimore, Sparks, Maryland, and Seattle, Washington. His grandchildren, Fiona Flowers, Leo Flowers, and Will Benzing will miss his playfulness and sense of humor. Relatives and friends are invited on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at 11:00 AM to attend Billy’s Funeral Mass at Our Mother of Consolation Church, 9 East Chestnut Hill Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19118. A visitation will precede the mass at 10:00 AM. Following the mass, interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 3301 West Cheltenham Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19150. Following the interment, a luncheon will be held at the home of Brendan and Cindy Benzing. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Our Mother of Consolation Church or Keystone Care, 8765 Stenton Ave., Wyndmoor, PA 19038.
