Maureen Sacks

December 20, 1954 — July 29, 2024

Maureen Sacks, of Philadelphia, PA suddenly on July 29, 2024, at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital with the diagnosis of metastatic colon cancer.

Born December 20, 1954, Maureen is survived by her life partner, Joseph Mellek, her mother, Margaret Garvey <Thomas Garvey>, her siblings Jeffrey Sacks <Susan Hagy>, Tara < Curtis Alexander> Jud Bertholf, Joshua <Julie Bertholf> and her nieces, Naomi Bertholf and Margaret Bertholf.

From a very early age, Maureen was quite a rebel, known to cut elementary school classes and forging excuse notes for the nuns and convincing her younger brother to stay home with her and take part in other mischief. Maureen went on to graduate from Hatboro Horsham Class of 72.

Maureen was truly an individual, showcased in her sense of style, building from vintage stores and flea market finds always topped with a fine scarf and hat or beret! Her earlier hobbies included archery and working out with her partner Joe. She was a person of few words but was very expressive through her bright eyes and infectious smile which will never be forgotten.

Beginning in her teens, Maureen began working at the Spectrum in Philadelphia PA as a secretary to the guys who ran the unions for stagehands, carpentry and security. She quickly advanced to Group Sales Manager and was known as the “ticket lady” for her ability to secure tickets for Disney and the circus, but mostly for concerts like Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Alice Cooper. As she moved on from the Spectrum, she became the “boxing lady” through her accomplished career as VP of Operations for J. Russel Peltz Boxing Promotions. She was always recognized at the Blue Horizon in Philadelphia, Atlantic City NJ. Many fights also led her to travel to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New Orleans, as well as overseas to London, Paris, Budapest and anywhere HBO or Showtime Fights were located.

In her more personal life, she focused solely on others as she artfully prepared dishes for her all the family functions and sold her beautiful cakes and pies to various establishments including a restaurant in Avalon NJ, a couple of country clubs, and the Aspen Pub and restaurant in Philadelphia. Although she could not partake in sweets, she knew exactly what we all loved, especially Joe.

Maureen was truly a fighter in her own right, as she survived armed robbery, a house fire and ongoing complications with Juvenile Diabetes. More recently, she also fought a 100-day battle in the ER to survive heart and kidney issues ending in a fight to rehabilitate including learning to walk again

Maureen loved her cats Ariel and the large Maine Coons she and Joe adopted together.

In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association or American Cancer Society. A celebration of life will be set on a date to be determined for friends and family
