Beloved husband of Karen Bosler for almost fifty years, loving father of their three sons, John Christie II (Erin), Andrew Hathorn (Heather) and Christopher Bosler (Sarah), four grandchildren and five adoring Golden Retrievers. Jack passed away peacefully on January 12, 2025 in Chestnut Hill where he and his family lived and were active for over 40 years.
Born in Philadelphia on July 4, 1934, Jack graduated from Onley High School and Penn State. He trained and served as an Army cryptographer, after which he worked for his college fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha. In 1970 he earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from The Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania.
His lifelong career in healthcare began in 1962 as an Assistant Administrator at Pennsylvania Hospital, America’s oldest and still operating hospital since 1772. From that beginning he dedicated his career to access to high quality community healthcare.
Jack was a founder of Philadelphia Health Management Corporation (PHMC). Through his leadership and direction, PHMC flourished and remains the leading non-profit enabler of public health and social services to underserved persons and communities.
He was the Senior Vice President of Independence Blue Cross. Jack’s long and successful career in community health continued when he was named CEO of Crozer Chester Hospital in 1984. Jack retired in 2006 but not before bringing together four separate and competing hospitals, forming Crozer Health System. In the process he helped found Cassatt Insurance Company, Ltd. to ensure affordable access to insurance to support healthcare providers in the Delaware Valley region.
He served on the boards of Hospital Association of Pennsylvania, American Hospital Association (AHA), Voluntary Hospitals of America (VHA), and numerous civic and business organizations, including the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) and the Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA). He was a close advisor to every Presidential Administration from President Nixon to President Cliton on matters of public health. After his retirement he actively served on the Board of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Chestnut Hill Community Association. He was a proud member of the Union League of Philadelphia for more than forty years and a member of the Saint Andrews’ Society of Philadelphia.
At his request, in lieu of a memorial service, he has asked his three sons to host a joyous and fun gathering of family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues, in a celebration of everyday good friendship and love of community. A celebration of his life and legacy will be held for family and friends at The Union League Liberty Hill from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on January 31, 2025. Contributions in his name will be welcomed by the Chestnut Hill Community Association.
