Charles J. Ingersoll, II

November 15, 1946 — January 15, 2025

Charles Jared Ingersoll of Wyndmoor, PA, and Northeast Harbor, Maine, died on January 15th, 2025 at Chestnut Hill Hospital, Philadelphia, after a short illness. He was born on November 15, 1946 at the Chestnut Hill Hospital. His father was Charles Edward Ingersoll and his mother was Alice Wood Levis. Charles Ingersoll was a direct descendant of Jared Ingersoll, a signer of the United States Constitution. His grandfather, R. Sturgis Ingersoll, was a founding partner of the Philadelphia law firm of Ballard Spahr Andrews and Ingersoll.

Charles attended Chestnut Hill Academy and graduated in 1965 from Millbrook School, Millbrook, NY, where he was President of his class and the Student Council. He then graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1969 with a BA. He was a member and president of Zeta Psi Fraternity.

He married Patricia Disston Brock on October 10, 1968 in Philadelphia. They had two children, Anna Pratt Ingersoll and Andrew Wood Ingersoll. The marriage ended in divorce in 1998.

Mr. Ingersoll began his professional career in 1970 with the Trust Department of the Fidelity Bank (now Wells Fargo). In 1979, he moved to Philadelphia National Bank where he headed up the Personal Financial Planning department. In 1985, Mr. Ingersoll joined The Rittenhouse Trust Company (now The Haverford Trust Company) where he worked as an Executive Vice President and Director until retirement in 2017.

He was deeply involved with community organizations and nonprofits and spent many years as a board member and past President of the Woodmere Art Museum, board member and co-vice chair of the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania, trustee of the Morris Animal Refuge, board member and past President of the Penllyn Club (Springhouse, PA), among others.

Mr. Ingersoll was an avid motorcyclist, spending much of his free time on adventures both here and abroad. In his earlier years, outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, running and cycling were an important part of his life. “Family is the most important thing” are words he said often and an ethos he practiced unfailingly, whether with his family at his homes in Philadelphia and Northeast Harbor, Maine or through regular correspondence.

He is survived by his daughter, Anna, of Chapel Hill, NC (married to Alain Jacques Creissen), and grandchildren, James Auguste Creissen and Cecilia Louise Creissen, and by his son, Andrew, of Wyndmoor, PA (married to Chloe Short), and grandchildren Beatrice Ingersoll and Soren Ingersoll.

A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, January 30th, 11:00 am at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 22 E. Chestnut Hill Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19118.
