Almira Joan (Mortimer) Sharp Almira Joan (née Mortimer) Sharp peacefully completed her 90 years of living and loving on May 28, 2022. She stayed sharp to the end. She was a strong and passionate wife, a creative and joyful mother, a fun and proud grandmother, a dear great-grandmother and already loving her great-grandchildren yet to be. Almira served as Clerk of her Quaker Meeting in Newtown, PA, having found her spiritual home with the Friends after retiring and moving back to the Philadelphia area where she grew up. She started her Saturday mornings by sharing yoga at the meetinghouse. She was the beloved preschool story reader at the library in Newtown. She worked hard to match clients with just the right home as a realtor. As stage manager for many plays at the Omaha Community Playhouse, she was known for her punny dedications before each performance. It was in the Drum and Bugle Corps that she met her husband Jack. After living in the same house her whole childhood, Almira then kept track of the 20 addresses where she lived in nine States and England. She was an enthusiastic military spouse, setting up new houses every couple of years and then taking her family to see all the sights in every new city and serving as an Officers Wives Club president. Almira was a natural leader. As her high school class president her campaign slogan was "Our Mortimer is No Dummy", which makes sense when you consider that her last name was Mortimer and the ventriloquist Edgar Bergen's dummy Mortimer Snerd was popular at that time. She served as the Religious Education Director of the Unitarian Church where we were members in DC. She was a PEO chapter president, an organization that provides scholarships for women. Her sewing talents kept Diane and Joan in matching dresses. She also cross-stitched many family treasures. Almira lived the last 14 years at Spring House Estates in Lower Gwynedd, PA, a retirement community that is the best place imaginable for all the stages of older life. Daughter Diane has been nearby for years and they have been providing constant support for each other. Son Doug lives across the country but they spoke regularly and he visited her last year. Mom sadly lost son John in 2020 to Covid. Daughter Joan was glad to be able to visit frequently since she retired. For the 25 years since her beloved husband Jack Sharp died, she always had a picture of him on her bedside table. A few years ago, she asked for a second picture to put there - Dad next to his MG sports car. Mom and Dad were inseparable in life and now in death. Mom passed away on the exact day twenty-five years after Dad died. Almira’s greeting and sign-off was "Love, Peace and Joy." She not only said it but also lived an exemplary life of love, peace and joy. Almira is survived by her children Douglass Walter Sharp, Joan Almira Erickson and Diane Almira Sharp; their spouses Alex Matthews, Robert Charles Erickson and Raymond Romano; grandchildren Stuart Miguel Rubio, Adam Charles Erickson, Jane Almira Sharp, Joshua Douglass Erickson, Zachary John Allen, Miles Patrick Roman, and Douglass Ewan Roman; great-grandchildren Dakota John Allen, Ashton John Rubio, Ethan Ray Rubio, Evan Daniel Rubio, Amelia Marie Allen and Wyatt Dean Allen. She was preceded in death by her husband John “Jack” Douglass Sharp, son John Stuart Sharp, parents Horace and Almira Duffield (Matthews) Mortimer, and her brother Richard Walter Mortimer. A memorial service was held on June 1st, 2022 at 2:00pm at Newtown Friends Meeting in Newtown, PA. Memorial donations can be made to the Newtown Monthly Meeting.
