In Loving Memory of Alan Robert Powell:
Alan Robert Powell, cherished father, grandfather, brother, uncle, dedicated husband, brilliant mathematician, and computer scientist, peacefully departed this world on January 2nd, 2024, at the age of 81, surrounded by his loving family.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Diane L. Powell (Rogers), his sons Adrian and Tony Powell, his brother Colin Powell, and four adoring grandchildren: Owen, Anya, Jeremy, and Gabriel.
Born on August 4th, 1942, in the town of Prestbury, in the county of Cheshire, England, to Henry Russell Powell and Kathleen Mary Powell (Mercer), Alan's journey through life was marked by intellectual prowess, compassionate heart and devout dedication to family. His family then moved to Prestwick, Scotland where he attended Ayr Academy paving the way for his pursuit of knowledge at the University of Edinburgh, where he earned a degree in Mathematical Science in 1964.
Embarking on a career that blended numbers and innovation, Alan joined the Univac division of Sperry-Rand Corporation, navigating the realm of large mainframe computers with finesse. His unwavering commitment led him to stay with the same company, later known as Unisys, for a remarkable 36-year career until his well-deserved retirement in 2000.
Alan's professional journey took his family to captivating locales, from the historic streets of Rome, Italy, to the scenic beauty of Estoril, Portugal, and the vibrant energy of London, England, before settling in Fort Washington, PA, and finally finding home in the delightful town of Penllyn, PA.
In a testament to enduring love, Alan and Diane Powell recently celebrated their remarkable 56th wedding anniversary on December 30th, 2023.
